As some of you know, I recently Re-Branded from a portrait photographer who pretty much did a little bit of everything to specifically, a Lifestyle Portrait Photographer. I guess you could say I have been trying to "Find Myself" in the Photography world. What do I enjoy shooting most? What kinds of images speak to me when I see them? What moves me the most? What gives me the "feels"? It has taken me about 5 years to figure that out!
I have officially decided to specialize in Lifestyle Portrait Photography shooting Engagements, Couples, Families, Maternity and Family/Newborn. If you don't know the difference between Portrait photography and LIFESTYLE portrait photography, let me explain it to you...
Portrait sessions aim to the subject(s) in a beautiful and artistic way. They usually take place anywhere such as the mountains, lakes, rivers, meadows, parks, or even downtown. These sessions can definitely capture some special moments at the location you've chosen but the location isn't usually chosen based on your lifestyle. Most people choose their portrait session locations based on their opinions and preferences of beauty or how they want their images to look.
Lifestyle Portrait sessions aim to capture REAL LIFE in an artistic way. It can be a date with the one you love at a Coffee Shop, sipping on a glass of wine and making s'mores while relaxing by a bonfire (If it were me, though, I would be sipping on an IPA), playing with your Family pet, cooking pancakes together in the morning, camping, or simply snuggling up and being together at home. The possibilities of the things that can be captured at a lifestyle session are endless! These sessions usually take place in home or a place you frequent.
In my opinion, Lifestyle sessions are the most genuine and memorable. That's why I have decided that, that is what I want to specialize in. I want to give my clients images that they can look back on and remember that exact moment. I want my clients to feel comfortable instead of awkward in front of the camera. I want more authenticity and less posing. Your home, a place you frequent together or capturing an activity you love to do together is perfect for all of that! Lifestyle sessions are also great year round! No matter how cold or hot it is outside.
My sister in law who owns Amanda Warnock Photography in Lakeland, Florida came to visit us in October of 2017 and did a lifestyle shoot of my family and I will forever cherish those images. It captured such real moments that make me literally smile every single time I look at them. Below are several of those images...
Y'all...THIS is what I want to do (with my own editing style, of course). None of these images were posed! They were all authentic moments. I LOVE that. My husband actually HATES his picture taken and he doesn't mind lifestyle Portraiture at all. So for all you men (or even women) out there that dislike having your picture taken, being posed and smiling directly at a camera, lifestyle is your best option!
Now...let me approach a different topic about Lifestyle...some of you who hear "In-Home lifestyle sessions" probably feel nervous because you don't feel like you live in a home that is big enough, pretty enough, updated enough, etc...As long as it isn't a clustered mess and dirty and has some natural light coming in through some windows, it doesn't have to be PERFECT! It's OKAY. Everyone's life journey and story is different and it's a BEAUTIFUL thing. PLEASE capture it wherever you are and wherever life has you in this moment. You won't regret it. I guarantee you, they will be some of your most treasured memories.
Although I haven't done a shoot like this yet, I STILL know that it's what I want to specialize in. Lifestyle is everything that I love about photography and I can't wait to see where my career in this area goes!
